Sandurot which means, "fellowship and reaching
out," and is derived from the Visayan word “pakig-sandurot” for the
offering and enjoyment of hospitality. It is a colorful, annual fiesta event to
commemorate Dumaguete’s rich history dating the pre-Hispanic period where
peoples of different and foreign cultures, including Chinese, Japanese and
Spanish, came together to create a diverse community that is Dumaguete
today.
Sandurot Festival is a joyful celebration of the people of
Dumaguete, a “university-city” and a “City of Gentle People,” their innate hospitality,
friendliness, and their propensity to live harmoniously with people of
different race, religion, and cultural beliefs and is very significant in
understanding the religious cultures of the people of Dumaguete. History tells
how the Dumagueteños welcome strangers from different shores and countries, and
live with them in complete peace and understanding.
This is also a celebration for the whole Roman Catholic for Dumaguete City's patroness, St. Catherine de
Alexandria, the Patroness Saint of the Philosophers.
The event usually begins with a program at the Rizal Boulevard and
a ceremony welcoming the various cultural stains that enriched the city’s
character and followed by a merry street dance competitions and interesting
field presentations to celebrate the “pakig-sandurot.” This event is
participated by barangays in the city, schools and/or civic organizations.
