The almost-symmetrically-conical-shape 2462 meters (8,077 ft.)  Mayon Volcano (Mount Mayon) is an active stratovolcano and the main landmark  of Albay Province (300 km. southeast of Manila), in the Bicol Region. Local folklore refers to the volcano as Bulkang Magayon after the legendary heroine Daragang Magayon (Lady Beautiful). It is 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the Gulf of Albay, in the cities and municipalities of Legazpi City, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Tabaco City, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo.

Mayon Volcano rises 2462 m (8,077 ft) above the gulf with summit crater diameter of 200 meters and a base circumference of 62.8 km and covers an area of about 250 square km.  It erupted about 43 times since 1616 with major eruptions in 1993 , 2000 and 2006. The most violent and devastating eruption occurred on February 1, 1814 that severely damaged the nearby towns, ruined half of Guinobatan with at least 1, 200 casualities. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire spans all coasts of the Pacific Ocean, including South America, North America, Alaska, China, Japan, Java and New Zealand.
